The
Chiffons
were one of the best and most enduring girl groups.
They had more hits than most, and a deeper examination
of their catalog reveals gems that never get played
on oldies radio. "He's So Fine," "One
Fine Day," "Sweet Talkin' Guy" are great,
but "I Have A Boyfriend," the eerie "Nobody
Knows What's Going On In My Mind (But Me)," "My
Block," and "When The Boy's Happy (The Girl's
Happy Too)" are just as wonderful. Oddly, however,
the Chiffons have never been treated to a really deluxe
reissue of their hits. At 26 tracks, Remember Records'
One
Fine Day (1994, pictured) is the best among just
a few, budget-oriented choices; Fuel 2000's Absolutely
The Best (2004) is a cheaper, shorter alternative
that may prove easier to find.
However, if you can dig up a copy of Ace Records'
Greatest
Recordings (1990, now deleted), it's the best CD
compilation ever done of the Chiffons' rich repertoire.
Among the treasures buried on Greatest
Recordings is a latter-day cover of George Harrison's
"My Sweet Lord," the song that Harrison,
perhaps unwittingly, plagiarized from the Chiffons'
own "He's So Fine."
