The
Chantels
were no shrinking violets. Singer Arlene Smith didn't
so much sing as holler on pitch, inflamed with passion
and teenage lust. She wasn't about to wait around like
most girl singers of the time, sighing passively, waiting
for "the boy." The title of "Maybe,"
their best-known hit, surely was ironic. Arlene was
damned sure of her love, and her fiery performance
let the world know that she would get her man. Girl
groups, like doo wop crews and surf bands, were usually
short-lived. Most had one hit and returned to obscurity.
The Chantels were an exception; they charted eight
times over five years. All those hits, including "Maybe"
and "Look In My Eyes," are on Rhino's Best
Of The Chantels.
