Beginning
her career as a replacement for Anita O'Day in Stan
Kenton's band, June
Christy later came to great fame as a soloist.
Her "cool" vocal style was quite influential,
and she worked with many great musicians after Kenton:
arranger Pete Rugolo, drummer Shelley Mann, trumpeter
Maynard Ferguson and more. Day Dreams (Blue
Note) compiles her non-Kenton early work, and a few
solo albums - most notably her classic debut, Something
Cool - are available on CD. Capitol's Spotlight
On June Christy is a very good primer.
