In the 1950's,
the Chordettes took
the closely sung harmonies of the Andrews Sisters and married them to the styles
of the day. The result was almost, but not quite, doo wop. Their best-known tunes, "Mr.
Sandman" and "Lollipop" are cute yet expertly sung novelties; their
other hits were often covers of rock songs ("Eddie My Love"), but some
("Born To Be With You") originated with group. The Best Of The Chordettes (Rhino)
or Varese's 25 All-Time Great Recordings are the best among several available
collections.
