Canada's
leading entry into the "No Depression" sweepstakes is Blue
Rodeo. These lads took a while to really get their footing (on the otherwise
decent Outskirts and Diamond Mine), but when they did, man,
they busted loose. Casino and Lost Together are sterling records,
combining the best of Blue Rodeo's influences (Neil Young, Gram Parsons, the
Byrds) into a cohesive whole woven around great pop songs. One of those songs,
"Till I Am Myself Again" (from Casino), is a take-it-to the-bank
classic, infectious beyond the point of reason. The follow-up, Five Days
In July, had some super songs (the first three) but was a letdown overall.
After that, the band seemed to fall apart, cutting several dismal records, though
the final chapter has not been written.
