I
bring up this group, the Blood
Oranges, primarily so I can laud their album The Crying Tree
(which, along with their other albums, is sadly out-of-print). I feel it's
one of the best of the alt.country/Americana pack. Other artists like Wilco
or Steve Earle have gotten all the press, but the Blood Oranges and especially
that album deserve some ink. The Crying Tree ranges from giddy bluegrass-derived
stomps like "Halfway 'Round The World" to heart-rending dirges like
the title song. It was the culmination of their career, though; member Cheri
Knight has cut some very good solo records.
