Bob Marley changed
reggae music irrevocably with his landmark work of the 1970's, and one of the groups
that has led the music in a similar, positive direction is Culture.
Their revolutionary-but-nonviolent pacifist politics and their progressive-yet-traditional
sound have made them (especially the charismatic Joseph Hill) leaders in the two
decades since Marley's death. Like many groups, however, their early work is indisputably
their best. Their 1978 debut, Two Sevens Clash, in particular, is a groundbreaking
classic, and they followed it with several top-notch discs (all in-print on Shanachie)
before the end of the decade.
Music Club (a good
budget label from England) released an excellent overview of these years, Strictly
Culture: The Best Of Culture 1977-79 - if you can find it. Beyond that,
no career-spanning retrospective exists, so collecting the best of Culture may
tax your pocketbook and/or
patience. Start with Two Sevens Clash and proceed from there.
