When Heart
Of The Congos, a 1977 Lee Perry production, was reissued in 1996 by Blood & Fire,
I had never even heard of the Congos,
let alone listened to the record. I hadn't read any of the album's glowing reviews
when a used copy showed up in the record store I used to work at. I slapped it
in the player, and, well, hubba hubba hubba... My jaw dropped and I immediately
purchased it. Heart is a damn fine piece of work that deserves all the
slathering praise it gets (All Music Guide calls it one of the ten best reggae
albums of all time). The CD reissue has a bonus disc of remixes and dubs, but not
much else is available by the band.
