One
of my favorite reggae phenomena is the cover song. Thousands of popular rock
and soul tunes - many quite unlikely - have been transformed into reggae classics. Bread's "Everything
I Own" by Ken
Boothe is foremost among this repertoire. Many (not me) would consider
the original bathetic and pedestrian. In Boothe's hands, it soars, becoming
one of the single greatest reggae records ever cut largely on the strength
of the understated performance. Actually, Ken Boothe had a long career as a
soulful singer prior to "Everything I Own" (which hit it big in England),
recording in the rock steady style for Studio One. These sides are restored
on Heartbeat's A Man & His Hits. The later songs are featured
on 18 Classic Songs or, preferably, Everything I Own on the
British reggae label Trojan. The pick of the litter, however, would be Crying
Over You: The Anthology, a career-spanning 2-CD set.
