An American Tour Diary
by Johnny Moped
excerpted from his Sex Pistols history "The Filth & The Fury,"
originally posted on
his website Make The Music Go Bang!
Tuesday, January 3, 1978. The Sex Pistols arrive in New
York. Never Mind The Bollocks, the Pistols' sole LP release,
stands at Number 108 on the Billboard charts. |

Johnny Rotten In Atlanta |
Thursday, January 5. The Pistols fly to Atlanta
for their first show at the Great Southeast Music Hall, which turns out to be in a
shopping mall. During a disappointing show, vocalist Johnny Rotten tells the onlookers, "Aren't
we the worst thing you've ever seen? You can all stop staring at us now."
Friday, January 6. The Pistols fly to Memphis
and their plane is struck by lightning. On arriving, bassist Sid Vicious disappears,
desperate to find some heroin. He turns up before their show at the Talyesin Ballroom,
which holds 700 people. Outside, 200 disgruntled punters riot and smash windows trying
to get in. |
Sunday, January 8. The band arrive in San Antonio to play
Randy's Rodeo, a ballroom that has sold out its 2,200 capacity. As soon as the band
take the stage, they are pelted with beer cans, hot dogs and popcorn. Vicious tells
the crowd, "You cowboys are all a bunch of fucking faggots!" When a young
cowboy tries physical retaliation, Vicious hits him with his bass. The show is stopped
for several minutes while the cowboy is taken away by police. He later denounces the
Pistols as "sewer rats with guitars" on TV. |
Sid Vicious in Memphis |
Kingfisher Club, Baton Rouge |
Monday, January 9. During their show at Baton Rouge's Kingfisher
Club in Louisiana, Vicious starts to have sex with a girl who gets on stage. The crowd
shower the band with money; Vicious and Lydon pick up a welcome $15 after the gig.
Interband relations are so bad that guitarist Steve Jones refuses to travel on the
tour bus. He and drummer Paul Cook fly to the remaining shows. |
Tuesday, January 10. The Pistols play Dallas' Longhorn Ballroom.
Vicious, who has scrawled the words 'I need a fix' in magic-marker on his naked chest,
howls, "All cowboys are queer!" during the gig. When a girl headbutts him
on the nose, Vicious lets his blood flow down his chest. He is so out of it that the
wait between songs is now several minutes, causing Lydon to sneer: "Look at that
- a living circus."
Wednesday, January 11. The band travel through a blizzard
to play at Tulsa's Caine's Ballroom. Outside, a Baptist pastor pickets the show, saying, "There
is a Johnny Rotten inside each of us, and he doesn't need to be liberated, he needs
to be crucified." |
Longhorn Ballroom, Dallas |
Sid Vicious, San Francisco |
Friday, January 13. Manager Malcolm McLaren,
Jones, and Cook check into San Francisco's Miyako Hotel. By this time, the Pistols
have been banned from American Airlines and Holiday Inn hotels. Finding out they have
been banned from Finland, where they are due to play in five days, McLaren suggests
they go to Rio to play with train robber Ronnie Biggs.
Saturday, January 14. Rotten and Vicious arrive
in San Francisco. Vicious immediately goes to Haight Ashbury to score smack. At the
Winter Ballroom, 5,000 gather to witness what turns out to be the Pistols' final gig. "This
is no fun," Lydon tells the crowd as the band start to play "No Fun." He
leaves the stage with the words, "Ever get the feeling you've been cheated?" |
