Julian
Cope is one of the the truly bizarre figures of English rock
'n' roll, just barely this side of Syd Barrett in the normality sweepstakes.
At his best, he can be direct and powerful ("World Shut Your Mouth," "Pristeen");
at his worst, he can be incomprehensible. Floored Genius: The Best Of Julian
Cope And The Teardrop Explodes is split evenly between Cope's solo work and
his days as leader of the Teardrop
Explodes, one of England's leading post-punk bands. The Teardrop Explodes'
records (and many of Cope's solo albums) are deleted, so Genius is a particularly
valuable record; Cope's Peggy Suicide is his best, and, last time I looked,
you could still get it. Floored Genius Vol. 2 is a collection of BBC recordings.
