The Catherine
Wheel cut several albums (plus a good b-sides collection) during the
post-Nirvana flowering of English guitar bands centering around industrial
towns like
Manchester and Birmingham. They shared an affection for layered, distorted
guitars with the Stone Roses and their ilk, but they eschewed dance rhythms
for a more artful, Pink Floyd-derived approach. The first two albums have
awesome moments ("Black Metallic," "Crank"), but the
third, Happy Days, is a stunner. The band focused their songwriting,
distilling an already formidable capacity for beauty and power into a killer
bunch of songs. Their recent albums, Adam & Eve and Wishville, have
been a bit of a comedown, but they were in lofty territory. What really pisses
me off is that Radiohead are getting rich while these guys will soon be back
pumping gas.
