A reluctant
star if there ever was one, J.J.
Cale coasted sleepily through thirty years of celebrity. Under the
patronage of Eric Clapton, he cut numerous records filled with good, sometimes
great songs delivered in his own unique, soft- shoe style, then sat around
in Oklahoma minding his own business. "Cocaine," "Call Me The
Breeze," "Crazy Mama," "Hey Baby" and "After
Midnight" are his best known songs (mostly as covered by others), and
they're all on The
Very Best Of J.J. Cale, a newly compiled and mastered disc on Mercury Records.
There's also a big double-disc anthology called Anyway
The Wind Blows, which includes material cut for Silvertone and Virgin,
that will appeal mainly to hardcore fans and/or J.J. Cale's blood relations.
