People
arrive at the Box
Tops from a number of directions. Fans of
Big Star, Alex Chilton's
less popular but more influential later group, want
to hear what the pop wunderkind did as a boy. R&B
aficionados appreciate the pioneering "blue-eyed
soul" the band's producers manufactured. Oldies
lovers just dig "The Letter," "Cry Like
A Baby" and "Soul Deep." No matter,
the Box Tops, along with producers Chip Moman, Tony
Cogbill, and Dan Penn, made a bunch of good records
(only Chilton played on the sessions - studio players
did the rest). They helped lay the groundwork for such
artists as Tony Joe White, Dobie Gray, and even Elvis
Presley (during his "Memphis" period). Soul
Deep: The Best Of The Box Tops is absolutely the
one to get.
