The path to rock glory is littered with guitar heroes. Be Bop Deluxe and leader Bill Nelson are a unique example, falling in the space between hard and progressive rock. Nelson's fluid, lyrical lines pushed the band's esoteric songs close to the mainstream but never far enough to garner a hit. Their influence could be felt among bands as far afield as King Crimson and Television. Be Bop Deluxe's catalog is somewhat in disrepair, but a good collection, Very Best Of Be Bop Deluxe (Collectables) is available domestically, and a larger set, Air Age Anthology (not be confused with the concert album Live! In The Air Age) is readily available as an import. The consensus classic Sunburst Finish and several other good LPs are available on CD, too.
