Motown recorded
a lot of groups, not just the handful that casual fans remember. Most had that "Detroit
sound," but few were as raucous and untamed as the Contours. "Do
You Love Me" is their one single that still gets airplay, in large part due
to its inclusion in the film Dirty Dancing. Without a doubt, "Do You
Love Me" is as good as 60's dance music gets, but the Contours had other fine
platters, especially Smokey Robinson's racy "First I Look At The Purse," later
covered by the J. Geils Band. The Very Best Of The Contours has 15 cuts
from the group's short career.
