The Clovers were
an early doo wop group that used a lot of humor in their music and, despite
great success on the R&B charts, did not often cross over to the pop charts.
They were great fun - a sort of more traditional Coasters - and they cut most
of their best records like "One Mint Julep" and "Ting-A-Ling" for
Atlantic. This makes Rhino/Atlantic's Down
In The Alley: The Best Of The Clovers a pretty damn fine record and solid
choice for hardcore R&B fans.
However, a
more recent collection on Rhino, The
Very Best Of The Coasters, adds "Love Potion No. 9" and a few
other post-Atlantic hits and, so, is the best bet for the average consumer.
(Warning: Anthology on Ripete Records consists of
rerecordings.)
