Boston's late,
lamented
Cavedogs were
pop souls trapped in rockers bodies. Their swathed their music in an post-grunge
trappings that almost-but-not-quite obscured the underlying tunefulness of their
smart songs. Of their two full-length discs,
Joyrides For Shut-Ins (1990)
is the one to search out. Both albums, including the swansong
Soul Martini (1992),
are long out-of-print, but used copies aren't all that rare. Individual members of
the Cavegogs subsequently recorded a number of records - bassist
Brian
Stevens with XTC guitarist Dave Gregory; drummer Mark Rivers with his band
Poundcake;
and guitarist Todd Spahr with his group
Gravy.
